I took the dog for a walk up the steep hillside next to the pond this morning, and found this little guy in the grass. He's the first turtle I've seen this year.
Hi Patricia! Thanks for stopping by. I didn't know about the box turtles being in decline. We usually see 3 or 4 throughout the year. Sometimes we find them in the oddest places, like way at the top of the ridge far from any water source. Maybe they drink the dew off the grass. I think this one was heading toward the pond oor the creek. His narrow trail of flattened grass led off up the hillside and into the forest.

What a find! Box turtles are in decline nation-wide and are protected in most states. Great pic too.
